We were recently asked to review Melissa Lunden’s new book Sew a Modern Home by That Patchwork Place by Martingale.
Melissa’s book has only been out for a month and we were really happy to be able to get a look inside!
The book breaks the projects up by room, each chapter being a different room and each room having 1-4 projects. Most rooms include a quilt pattern and coordinating pillow or accessory.
We loved the dining room table runner project with coordinating placemats and napkins. The color choices are fresh and modern, but it wouldn’t be hard at all to envision any of the projects in other color pallets or with completely different fabric choices.
While most of the projects use solids, there are a few examples of projects with prints. We found that the styles are all fairly classic and the heavy use of solids makes the book stand out as something that will be more timeless and much easier to reinterpret in any style.
The Sharp Turn Quilt particularly grabbed us as being simple and clean but really striking.
We loved the use of color and the large-scale patterns created in most of these projects.
Melissa also did a great job of creating accent pieces to coordinate with the quilt projects that don’t look overly matchy. The two pillow designs for the Living Room chapter add a lot of contrast to the simple quilt design.
The instructions are all clear and most of the patterns are simple enough for someone new to quilting to be able to jump in. The standard quilting basics section that covers most of what you need to know to make a quilt from start to finish is at the beginning of the book.
The thing we found most appealing about this book was the simplicity of the designs. Having spent many hours staring at quilt patterns and trying to imagine what they might look like with different fabric choices, this book stood out as one that really leaves the door open for re-interpretation of fabric choice, which is so helpful when envisioning whether a pattern will look right in a certain room or with your favorite fabric line. And we think the Dancing Chevrons quilt pictured on the front cover would also be a great choice to feature a favorite large-scale print.
The most exciting thing about this book is that Melissa has given us a signed copy to give away to one of our readers! If you’d like to enter, simply leave a comment below telling us which room in your house needs to be given a modern makeover and we’ll pick a winner this Friday!
Good luck!
